Which substrate is best?

Posted on 26 April 2017

At Lamination System, we offer a variety of substrate options for your mounting and signage requirements. But how do you know which one is best for your project? Check out the descriptions below to help you decide:

COREFLUTE

Coreflute is a corrugated twin wall sheet made from polypropylene, or in laymans terms... corrugated plastic. Lightweight, rigid and weatherproof, Corflute is a perfect low-cost material for short-term outdoor signs, but if looked after it should last a lot longer. Only downside for some people is the ridging is often visible through the print. We stock this in white and 5mm thick.

FOAMCORE

Foamcore is a lightweight material made of 3 layers - an inner layer of dense foam that is coated on either side with thin cardboard.  Only suitable for indoor use, Foamcor may bend or warp over time making it most suitable for short-term displays. Foamcore is significantly less expensive than Gatorboard but susceptible to breaking or denting if not handled correctly. It is available in white or black at 5mm thick.

GATORBOARD

Gatorboard is a display board with a dense inner core made of foam and a rigid exterior made of wood-fiber veneer. This exterior is water resistant (not waterproof - for that you need corflute!) and will not easily break or warp. Though made to resist scratching and breaking, Gatorboard is still prone to denting when too much pressure is applied. Due to the acid-free surface and durability gatorboard is more suited to fine art and photography mounting. We stock Gatorboard in 5mm black.

MDF

Your final mounting option is a 9mm MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) which is pine fibre and resin compacted together. MDF has fine and smooth surface ideal for mounting and you can choose from a square or bevelled edge. Being 9mm thick wood, MDF is much heavier than the three aforementioned products but is also more durable and long-lasting. Blockmounting is often used as a budget alternative to framing.

Still unsure which product is best for you? Give our team a call on 1300 099 030 (freecall) or pop in to our friendly reception area and have a look at some samples we have on display. You can also supply your own substrate or we can custom order other mounting products for larger jobs.
